In a freak coincidence the Towers and the Wolfpack again needed overtime to break a 14-14 tie. The Towers came out on top again, winning 20-17 on their first possession in overtime.
The Wolfpack got the first possession in overtime and managed a field goal to make the score 17-14. The Towers – scoreless in the entire second half – came up big when it mattered the most as QB Kasper Skyum lofted a perfect pass to WR William Elias for the go-ahead score.
In a game with plenty of drama it seemed only fitting that four quarters did not suffice to find a winner. The Towers appeared on top of the game, but two turnovers deep in their own territory cost them dearly. In the first quarter QB JR Artozqui threw an interception that gave the Wolfpack possession on the Towers’ 15-yard line and in the fourth quarter WR Patrick Hargett muffed a punt that gave possession to the Wolfpack on the Towers’ 5-yard line. Both of those turnovers turned into Wolfpack touchdowns.
Add to that two missed field goals by LB Casper Jensen, who temporarily served as the kicker, and an injury that forced starting QB JR Artozqui to the sideline in the second quarter and it’s easy to see how the Towers could have lost the game.
However, a stout defense, great team play and an offense that rallied around back-up QB Kasper Skyum proved that adversity brings out the best in people.
The defense played another very solid game allowing only 3 points other than the two touchdowns on
extremely short fields. Safety Victor Andersen recorded three interceptions, with a fourth falling just out of his reach. Furthermore the defense was in the face of Wolfpack QB Daniel Eidson all day.
The Towers got on the scoreboard on their first drive on a pass from QB JR Artozqui to WR William Elias to make the score 7-0. The Wolfpack then tied the game at 7-7 after getting possession on the Towers’ 15-yard line on a turnover.
Early in the 2nd quarter QB JR Artozqui ran the ball in himself for a 14-7 lead. That lead held until late in the 4th quarter when the Wolfpack again got the ball on a turnover within crawling distance of the Towers’ endzone. Thus the game was even at 14-14 five minutes before the end of regulation.
This was the second time this season that these two teams played an overtime game. When the Wolfpack visited Gentofte on May 30th the score at the end of regulation was 14-14, with the Towers winning 21-20 in overtime.
Winners of five straight games and with a record of 5-2 the Towers have now secured second place in our division and a spot in the play-offs.
Next up for the Towers is the 20th anniversary game on Friday night, August 20th at Gentofte. Gates open at 18.00 (6 p.m.).
